Before I start this blog post, I'd first like the say how much I feel like a cat today; I feel sluggish, lazy and unproductive so I'm forcing myself to write this blog post as I know I'll feel better after doing so.
As a kid, I used to love reading but never got encouraged to do so - I remember reading this big book about a pony, I read it all in at least 3 hours its wasn't that long looking back but I was only like 6 or 7 my nan whom I lived with at the time didn't believe me that I'd read it all and basically called me a liar. I then grew up thinking "what's the point in reading when I can just watch the film?" I didn't read many books back then, although I did like the "mates, dates" series and the angus thongs and perfect snogging series I actually read the books before I watched the film on this occasion.
Only recently, well about a year or two ago now, I realised the importance of books - knowledge is power blah blah blah but it's true! Literally if you want to learn any craft or facts or even just improve your vocabulary, reading is key! I've been big into psychology for a few years now, intrigued by how people and their minds work, how you can manipulate social interactions and most importantly how you can better yourself. I started reading self help books and it was a big turning point for me - luckily Shane is interested in the same thing so we share books and have in depth discussions about them. I've never found someone to share these kinds of thoughts with so always put them on the back burner and didn't think too much of it but since having someone to actually discuss these topics with has motivated me massively to read.
Since I've started reading again, I've noticed my vocabulary has grown, I look at the world in a different way and I think of new ideas - even though I mainly read non-fiction, it sparks my creative side too! If you don't read, how can you possibly form your own opinions on things, things you know nothing about? How can you possibly progress and create and learn? I don't think you can. One last point before I tell you my all time fav's is the fact that when I didn't read, I felt I was the only one who didn't feel confident, who wasn't good at socialising, and the only one who was an outcast, but reading books made me realise I wasn't actually alone. So, what books have sparked my mind?
I am really interested in that Steal Like An Artist one, I'll have to check it out. Great post!
